The title of the book says it all. I sat in pure disbelief, catching myself saying ”oh my god” out loud several times. It’s truly unbelievable how one person could endure so much trauma and still come out the other side with a positive outlook and a kind heart. I’ve read several memoirs but none of them compare to this one. This book truly touched my soul.
The easy part is the book itself. A lightweight paperback with easy to read print. So convenient while travelling on vacation. More difficult were the shocking revelations and events packed into each chapter. I found myself rushing to get back, to read the next chapter, to find out how each unique character fared though their unimaginable daily events. In the author's childhood years it was almost too much to bear and I thought I might put the book down. Curiosity got the best of me and I was happy to learn how these experiences changed his life through all.
A real and heart-wrenching story of man Lear ing to live himself; difficult given the obstacles he faced. So great to see that he not only survived but that he came out on the other side, a much person and human being that he had a chance to become! Kudos for the bravery and determination for making a better life and finding love in yourself.
